The 2015 MTV Video Music Awards broke the Internet (record books) Sunday night, becoming the most Tweeted non-sports program ever.
With host Miley Cyrus, the live telecast saw 2.2 million people send 21.4 million Tweets — which were seen by almost 11.8 million people, according to Nielsen’s Twitter TV ratings.
Only the Super Bowl has generated more tweets since Nielsen Social began tracking Twitter TV activity in October 2011.
Twitter activity was also up 69 percent from last year’s VMAs, which generated 12.6 million Tweets.
The most-tweeted moment of the night (247,525 tweets) came when Kanye West announced he would run for President in 2020 while accepting the Video Vanguard Award.
Other top social moments were John Legend and Pharell’s performance and West, Legend and Big Sean winning the Video with a Social Message Award.
The Twitter record didn’t translate to TV ratings, however — the “VMA” telecast averaged 9.8 million viewers across 10 MTV-affiliated networks, according to deadline.com.
That was down from 10.3 million in 2014.
