The Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board (LSFVCB) on Monday revealed that it has, in partnership with the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), arrested at least 26 suspected movie pirates and seized 7,000 copies of pirated films, especially pornographic films which were unclassified.
The arrests and seizure were carried out during a three-day anti-piracy raid in collaboration with the Yoruba Movie Producers/Marketers Association of Nigeria which covered the areas of Iyana-Ipaja, Agege, Oshodi, Ijora, Orile Iganmu and Obalende.
Executive secretary of the LSFVCB, Mr Bamidele Balogun told newsmen that the raid was part of the continuous effort to rid Lagos state of the sale of pirated and unclassified movies. He added that those arrested during the raids will be tried and brought to justice.
Balogun further stated that the Lagos state government was concerned that Nigerian artistes were not getting maximum benefits from their works and that this posed a serious challenge to the development of the creative sector of the state.
He maintained that piracy is the greatest enemy of creative industry, which must be defeated for the film industry as well as legitimate practitioners to grow.
